Shelter Support Worker

Job Description

Hire Horizon Inc is seeking compassionate and reliable Shelter Support Workers to support our client shelters and transitional housing facilities. The successful candidates will play a vital role in maintaining a safe, respectful, and supportive environment for individuals experiencing homelessness or housing instability. This role requires strong interpersonal skills, professionalism, and a genuine commitment to helping vulnerable populations.

Availability Requirements

• Flexible availability including days, evenings, nights, and weekends
• Shifts will vary based on client needs
• Hours are not guaranteed

Qualifications

• Previous experience in shelters, social services, or community support roles is an asset
• Post-secondary education in Social Work, Community Services, or a related field is an asset
• Vulnerable Sector Police Clearance
• CPR/First Aid certification is an asset
• Strong communication, conflict resolution, and documentation skills
• Ability to work calmly in high-pressure or crisis situations

Key Responsibilities

• Provide day-to-day support and supervision to shelter residents
• Maintain a safe, respectful, and structured environment within the facility
• Assist clients with basic needs, including orientation to the shelter, referrals, and daily routines
• Monitor resident behavior and de-escalate conflicts or crises when needed
• Conduct regular rounds and ensure compliance with shelter policies and procedures
• Document incidents, client interactions, and shift reports accurately
• Support clients’ emotional and social well-being while maintaining professional boundaries
• Assist with admissions, discharges, and room assignments as directed
• Report safety concerns, incidents, or changes in client behavior to supervisors

Health, Safety & Compliance

• Follow all health, safety, and infection control procedures
• Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when required
• Report hazards, incidents, and emergencies promptly
• Participate in required training, meetings, and in-service sessions
• Maintain confidentiality and uphold ethical standards at all times
